Federer setting sights on no. 3

There are a number of things Federer would like to achieve before ending the dismal year 2011.  First, he needs to defend the year-end title where he captured last year after defeating the then world no. 1 Rafael Nadal.  Seondly, he could climb back up to no. 3 and should serve as a consolation since it was very likely he was going to end up at no. 4 just a few weeks ago if not for Murray's recent mini slump.

On the contrary, Federer is having his own run of sort as of late approaching the end of the season as he racked up 2 straight titles (Basel and BNP Paribas Masters 1000) coming into the World Tour Finals.  The recent wins may not be very convincing as he didn't cross path with any of the top 6 players, but Federer should just be as happy adding 1 or 2 titles more to his trophy case.

With the ATP World Tour Finals reaching the knockout stages of the tourney, it's quite amazing to see the last man standing among the top 4 is the oldest of them all (Federer), with the others either injured or just too tired to compete at this point of the season.  A win tonight againsts Ferrer will cement his place in the top 3 for the year 2011, and hopefully this can generate a strong momentum going into the year 2012.
